Prize-giving and Exhibition 2005
Local Wildlife Photographers Honoured
On Friday 6th January 2006 the WMBP held a special prize-giving at the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust's Wolseley Centre for the winners of the West Midlands Wildlife Photography Competition 2005. The afternoon was a huge success with over 30 people attending and some fantastic prizes taken home. A buffet started the afternoon off, giving the guests a chance to chat and take a look at the exhibition of winning images.
Steve Holliday, Chair of the West Midlands Biodiversity Partnership opened the event and gave us all some food for thought as he showcased the new funding from SITA for biodiversity in the Region, and considered what lay in store for the Partnership in the year ahead.
The prizes and certificates were handed out by award-winning photographer Nick Garbutt. Danny Beath from Shropshire received the top prize of a Sigma wide angle to telephoto zoom lens especially for a digital camera for his charming and serene image of Porcelain Mushrooms, from the In Praise of Plants category.
Nick then inspired us all with his excellent talk on the wildlife of India where he runs regular photographic tours. The interesting mix of pictures showed us many aspects of the subcontinent, but concentrated on that old favourite - the tiger. Nick explained that, when faced with a dangerous predator, ingenuity is essential to capture that perfect shot. For one picture in particular, he had to attach his camera to a stick and poke it over the side of his elephant ride, just to get that eye to eye image of his subject.

Thanks to everyone who lent a hand with the organisation of the afternoon
